Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Targets Xbox 360 Gamers

by Dave Taylor

Infinity Ward, developer of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, returns with this year’s Modern Warfare 2, after last year’s Call of Duty game came from the series’ other developer, Treyarch. Activision has confidently stated that it expects Modern Warfare to be the biggest games launch ever seen.

That’s a bold assertion, because for a start the original Modern Warfare sold an incredible 12 million copies, and for another thing, Activision has raised the price for Modern Warfare 2 to a premium. Which means that Modern Warfare 2 is expected to shift more units with a higher price tag.

Gamers shouldn’t consider this bad news necessarily though, because it shows that Activision thinks that Modern Warfare 2 is good enough to warrant it. In terms of what’s on offer to gamers, it’s the usual combination of single player and multiplayer, with the latter being often cited as the reason behind the original’s success.

There has been multiplayer video footage shown off by Infinity Ward – demoing the new chain bonus, and the truth is that it does look great. All the graphics have been improved and polished since Modern Warfare, although there are still some concerns voiced on the internet forums about details on some of the snow levels.

To our eye, there’s more destructive environments, more details everywhere and smoother animation too. It’s not a million miles away from the original Modern Warfare, and let’s remember it is a sequel, but it does show improvements. The other negative so far is that it will only run in the same resolution as the original – 1024×600 – not true HD.

There’s little information on the single player campaign yet, but it is known that missions will be spread across different locations from Afghanistan deserts to Russian snowy mountains, and that once again the mission gameplay will vary.

Like every other aspect of Modern Warfare 2, it looks like Infinity Ward has chosen to take the successful elements from the original and just amp them up. More of the same but better, which makes it very much a sequel, and this case familiarity is likely to breed success.

Modern Warfare 2 is coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on 10th November 2009.
